Updated S3 guideline on dementia

The S 3 guideline on dementia has been updated. It emphasizes the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions and also attaches importance to gingko and aromatherapy in the treatment of dementia patients.

The guideline “Dementia” was developed in the lead by the German Society for Neurology (DGN) and the German Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Psychosomatics and Neurology (DGPPN) in collaboration with 21 specialist societies.

The experts emphasize the importance of psychosocial interventions in the treatment and care of dementia patients. The approaches and goals of these procedures are much broader than those of pharmacological therapies. Occupational therapy measures should also be used with the involvement of the caregivers. Physical activity and light training also seem useful.

Flavorings are suggested for agitated behavior and for general behavioral symptoms in patients with moderate to severe dementia. Ginko Biloba (EGb 761) could also be considered for treatment in patients with mild to moderate dementia and non-psychotic behavioral symptoms.

The caregivers of people with dementia often feel overwhelmed and as a result develop health problems. Therefore, the experts rely on intensive family training. More information can be found here. (pm)
