In addition to the well-known potato chips, you can also find vegetable chips on supermarket shelves - for example made from beetroot, turnip or sweet potato. It is known that vegetables are healthy, but does that also apply to fried vegetable slices? "It is positive that these vegetable chips have a relatively high fiber content," said Gabriele Graf from the NRW consumer center, according to a message from the dpa news agency. However, the products are only a little bit lower in calories than conventional chips.

Fat content as with potato chips
The Bavarian Consumer Service explained in an older report that the vegetable slices are mostly only fried and salted in sunflower oil and contain no additives such as flavor enhancers. The fat content is similar to that of potato chips. According to the experts, the great advantage of vegetables - low in calories, rich in valuable vitamins, minerals and healthy secondary plant substances - is lost in the chips. The content of heat-sensitive vitamins and secondary plant substances decreases as a result of deep-frying.

Simply make vegetable chips yourself
According to the experts, vegetables are the only food group from which it can never be too much. If you find vegetable chips tasty, you can treat yourself to a small portion from time to time, but it shouldn't be more than 50 grams per day. Vegetable chips are also easy to make yourself, for example from zucchini. As the consumer advice center in North Rhine-Westphalia explains, the washed zucchini is cut into thin slices and spread on a baking sheet. Then let it dry in the oven at 100 degrees. Depending on the thickness of the slices, the whole process takes around 50 minutes. Finally sprinkle with a little salt. (ad)
