First uniform concept for breastfeeding support

First uniform concept for breastfeeding support

New concept offers uniform basis for advanced training in breastfeeding
Breastfeeding has numerous positive effects on the health and development of the child, which is why the National Breastfeeding Commission and the Healthy Living Network recommend that breastfeeding only be carried out at least until the beginning of the 5th month of life. According to information from the consumer information service aid, "for the first time a nationwide uniform concept for basic advanced training in breastfeeding and breastfeeding support" has been developed.

The network reports healthy into life, an IN FORM initiative of the Federal Ministry of Food, together with the relevant institutions for breastfeeding training and support, the aid reports. This is intended to convey "uniform and scientifically sound basic knowledge for the advice and support of pregnant women and mothers on the subject of breastfeeding".

Breastfeeding only until the beginning of the 5th month
According to the aid agency, the recommendation of the National Breastfeeding Commission and the Healthy Network to only breastfeed at least until the beginning of the 5th month of life is only observed in a third of children in Germany, according to the results of the KiGGS study (wave 1). There is therefore a clear need for improvement here. The majority of expectant mothers make the decision whether to breastfeed or not early in pregnancy. That is why they need appropriate information about breastfeeding at this time, the aid emphasizes. Breastfeeding support should therefore start in pregnancy.

Many mothers breastfeed for only a few weeks
Continuing breastfeeding support is appropriate after birth, "because many mothers stop breastfeeding in the first six to eight weeks after birth or start feeding baby milk", the aid said. When supporting and accompanying mothers and their partners, multipliers such as doctors, midwives and medical assistants are particularly important because they have regular contact with young families and enjoy great trust with them. The concept for basic training on breastfeeding and breastfeeding support is therefore specially designed for providers and speakers who train multipliers from the environment of young families on the subject of breastfeeding. Because here "uniform and scientifically sound basic knowledge for the advice and support of pregnant women and mothers on the subject of breastfeeding is to be imparted", emphasizes the aid.

Important contribution to breastfeeding promotion in Germany
According to the aid, the concept of “breastfeeding and breastfeeding support: curriculum for basic advanced training” makes detailed stipulations on topics, contents and competencies - from the importance of breastfeeding and breastfeeding to advice on breastfeeding practice and dealing with special breastfeeding situations. In addition, organizational information and guidelines for quality assurance are listed. In addition, 45 ready-made slide suggestions for use in basic training are included, which can also be downloaded free of charge from the network in PDF format. The concept is differentiated for the target groups "doctors, other professional groups with prior knowledge of breastfeeding and professional groups without prior knowledge of breastfeeding", since there are often very different prior knowledge about breastfeeding in the different professional groups. Aligning the advanced training with the concept helps parents get the same, everyday and well-founded information about breastfeeding. Aid emphasizes that the multipliers could make an important contribution to promoting breastfeeding in Germany.
