Large-scale recall campaign for plastic particles in Mars chocolate bars

Mars launches recall campaign in a total of 55 countries
The confectionery manufacturer Mars has launched a comprehensive recall campaign for millions of chocolate products in 55 countries due to the presence of plastic particles. In Germany, according to the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL), the "chocolate products of the brands Mars, Snickers, Milky Way and Celebrations" are affected with best before dates between June 19, 2016 and January 8, 2017.

With the voluntary recall campaign, the confectionery manufacturer is reacting to the discovery of a plastic particle in one of its chocolate bars. Anyone who has purchased one of the aforementioned Mars products is asked to contact the manufacturer's hotline or use the contact form at www.mars.de. However, the website is currently hardly accessible, which is probably due to the large number of hits as a result of the recall campaign.

All potentially affected products should be retrieved
"Mars Chocolate has decided to voluntarily recall chocolate products from the MARS, SNICKERS, MILKY WAY and CELEBRATIONS brands after a plastic particle has been found in a product," according to the BVL website Lebensmittelwarnung.de. A precise list of the affected products is available on the manufacturer's website. However, this was not accessible most of the time today. "With this recall, we want to prevent consumers who have purchased one of the above-mentioned products from consuming it," explains the company. A very long production period was deliberately chosen "to ensure that all potentially affected products are brought back." The manufacturer emphasized that "no other Mars products are affected by this recall."

Mars Chocolate claims to be in close contact with the food authorities to ensure that all regulatory requirements for the recall are met. Mars takes quality and food safety very seriously and apologizes for the inconvenience this may cause, consumers said. However, the chosen method of recall through direct contact with the manufacturer seems to ignore the interests of consumers. Other companies certainly give the option of returning them to the job opportunities. In addition, many affected consumers who are currently trying to fill out the contact form on the Internet will have significant problems with the inaccessibility of the server. (fp)
