Men with erectile problems often have periodontitis
About three quarters of the adult population suffers from periodontitis. This chronic inflammation of the tooth structure not only damages the teeth, but can also cause dangerous diseases. Periodontitis apparently also has an impact on sex life, as Taiwanese researchers have found.
Periodontitis can lead to serious illnesses
In Germany, around three out of four adults suffer from periodontitis. This chronic inflammation of the tooth structure not only damages the teeth, but according to scientific studies can also cause life-threatening diseases. The germs can get into the bloodstream via the inflammatory foci in the gums and thus cause diabetes, vascular calcification or a heart attack. And only recently have American researchers found that some women are at high risk of breast cancer from periodontitis.
Effects on sex life
Periodontitis appears to have an impact on sex life in men. As researchers from Taiwan found in a study, men who have erectile problems often also suffer from periodontitis. The scientists published their results in the "Andrologia" magazine. While men generally do not like to talk about sexual dysfunction, the problem of impotence has been more widespread than one might think in recent years, according to health experts. Erectile dysfunction in men is not uncommon. In medical circles, impotence is called "erectile dysfunction". The most common cause is stress and mental suffering.
Men with erection problems often have bad teeth
And apparently there is also a connection with male oral hygiene. The Taiwanese researchers from Taipei Medical University and colleagues examined around 5,000 men from different age groups with erectile problems. They found that almost 80 percent of the subjects suffered from bacterial inflammation in the mouth. According to the scientists, the inflammation can damage the endothelial cells. These cells ensure that the vessels are filled - including those in the erectile tissue. But if they are damaged, this can make it difficult or even prevent the flow of blood into the penis. The result is erection problems. Avoiding periodontitis can therefore also provide protection against potency problems. (ad)
